About this Campaign
Fernwood Elementary is a large school with over 800 students. Morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up impacts traffic congestion on both Jewell Road and 39th Avenue SE. In thinking about the proposed boundary adjustment for 2020, most of our families will be within the 1-mile radius and will be expected to be driven, walk, or bike to school. With the current design of the school drop-off/pick-up loop this could be very problematic.
Currently, there are several students who choose to ride a bike or scooter to school. With no current bike racks, they lock their bike or scooter to the fence nearest the crosswalk on 39th Avenue SE. This is not ideal for their bike or scooter nor to the fence, as bikes are in direct sight of cars and pedestrians increases the likelihood of being stolen. Also, when locking their bike or scooter, students are walking up an incline, that in cold and icy weather could be a potential hazard should a student slip and fall.
With these considerations in mind, Fernwood Elementary would greatly benefit from funding for two bike racks to be installed in strategic places on our campus that would ensure safety for our students. We wish to encourage biking to school in order to ease our parking lot congestion and to provide for healthier and happier students.
