About this Campaign
In the School District of Philadelphia, 95% of Philadelphia public elementary schools lack a functioning library. Key School is so fortunate to have a functioning library at our school, allowing all Kindergarten through sixth grade students to visit the library on a weekly basis and check out books and materials to read at home! Our school was built in 1889, making Key School the oldest operating school building in the Philadelphia School District. This year we went through each book in our school library and removed all the books in our library that had been untouched for the past few decades - some of which had been in our building since the early 1900's! Due to this recent purge of old books that children were not checking out, we now have many completely empty book shelves in our school library! We are in need of modern and current books to help fill out library bookshelves.
Our school is located in a culturally rich and diverse area in South Philadelphia. Our student body is over 55% English Language Learners (ELLS), encompassing over 20 different languages within our school walls. Because of this, our motto at our school is "Diversity is our Strength." We strive to celebrate everyone's unique experiences. As our students are from diverse areas of the world, we would love to house our library with books which display many different perspectives, cultures, and experiences to help celebrate our diversity. Please help us purchase new and exciting stories to share with the students at our school!
