About this Campaign

Park Hill South Robotics, Electromagnetic Panthers (EMP), is part of the FIRST Robotics Challenge (FRC). This is a unique extracurricular activity that gives students hands-on experience in many fields including engineering, programming, electronics, marketing, business, and graphic design. Every year, we are given the task to design, prototype, build and test a robot in six weeks. Then we compete in regional competitions where our members learn to use gracious professionalism with others. Our belief is that members of team EMP can take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it to real-life skills in a tangible way.
As we enter our 7th year, we are committed to stay as an open membership team and believe that anyone should be allowed to join. Our team heavily depends on donations to allow students to participate regardless of social economic background. Last year EMP Robotics was very successful during our competitions. At the Illinois Regional, our team made it to the quarterfinals. We were on the winning alliance at the Heartland Regional and qualified for the FRC Championships in Houston. EMP Robotics also made it to the semifinals in the state championship. None of this would not have been possible without the donations we received from our community.
A major component of our team is to spread STEM awareness to the elementary schools in our district and to our community. A goal for this year is to helped start a First Lego League team (another branch of FIRST to introduce elementary and middle school kids to robotics) at Walden Middle School. The high school members of our team will support the FLL team by mentoring the middle school students. We also bring many STEM activities to PHSD elementary schools during the year through a variety of programs. Throughout the year at Park Hill South, we provide science activities to students in the special education department on each Tuesday. EMP Robotics also partners with several community groups to promote STEM such as Maker Faire, Midcontinent Library, and Girl Scouts.
A core value of our team is that no student should fail to attend a competition because of financial obstacles. To make this possible, we run several fundraisers and partner with many local businesses. While these avenues generate significant funds, it falls short of the budget required to run a team. Our budget for this year includes the following: $6,000 for tools and parts, $10,000 for travel fees, $10,000 in registration fees, $6,000 for lodging, and $1,000 for promoting STEM. If we qualify for the World Championships again, the budget will be increased by $25,000 for registration, travel, and lodging to Houston, TX. The generous donations we received through the InvestNOW grant has allowed us to participate in multiple competitions for the past four years, as well as our competition to Houston for the FRC championships. Because of the investment the Park Hill Community has shown in Park Hill South Robotics, FRC team 5126 (Electromagnetic Panthers) is committed to helping our community keep up with the technological revolution that is robotics.
