About this Campaign

The ironing board. Golf tees. Pencil sharpeners. Cell phone technology.
All invented or patented by African Americans.
Did you know that?

In the past, a traditional approach to teaching American history has not appropriately included the significant history of non-white Americans. Artifacts, imagery, and books from the Traveling American History Museum allow students, staff, & families to better learn, understand, and discuss the many important contributions of Africans and African Americans to this nation.

Woodin Elementary would like to bring the Traveling American History Museum to school for an on-site field trip to benefit all 517 students and 55 staff members and provide professional development. In addition, families and community members would be invited to attend an evening parent night. Artifacts, imagery and books from the Traveling American History Museum allow students, staff, & families to better learn, understand, and discuss the many important contributions of Africans and African Americans to this nation. It helps us recognize some of the ways a traditional approach to teaching American history has not appropriately included the significant history of non-white Americans. That wasn’t accidental. But now, we know better, and we can do better. It’s up to us to set the record straight for a new generation of American learners. Across our school communities, equity is embraced as a concept and shared value. The challenge every day is with changing the status quo, adopting new practices and putting them into action consistently. Part of moving the work forward is recognizing when it’s necessary to supplement what’s happening within the community with additional expertise. That’s what this on-site field trip would do for the Woodin community.

Please help us bring the Traveling American History Museum to our school. Please donate today. You can give securely online here.
