About this Campaign
Computer Science is ...
There are many technical definitions for this, but what it is MOST, is using technology to:
- Problem solve
- Build confidence
- Create solutions, resources, and art
- Encourage teamwork
- Play with robots!
Computer science utilizes technology to positively impact student learning in so many ways. There are many apps and programs that have onscreen activities for students that are wonderful teaching resources. Even more powerful than those, or in conjunction with them, are real life coding opportunities like robotics and the Lego WeDo kits.
Lego WeDo 2.0 is "based upon the latest science standards and was created to enhance students' curiosity and science skills". These kits and the accompanying app allow for a students creativity to come to life. There are projects that walk students through each step and even allow them to program their own creations. The result is a hands on, real life application of coding and problem solving, as well as encouraging creativity and teamwork.
We are hoping to add 12 Lego WeDo kits to our Computer Science program here at Calvert Elementary, which will allow students to work in pairs to create, learn, and explore real life applications of coding. We would be able to utilize these kits with almost 400 students K-5 throughout the school year, in addition to exploring outside of the school day applications.
