About this Campaign

McPhee is a school in the heart of the city with about 300 scholars attending early childhood thru fifth grade. We have the highest mobility among all elementary schools, with a mobility rate of 38%. In addition, 93% of scholars are eligible for free/reduced meals. Our school represents 13 different languages and 30% of our scholars identify as English Language Learners.

Simply put, stress, whether from poverty, trauma, or any other source can and does change the structure and processes of the brain. Constant stress without relief increases the baseline resting stress level of a person, changes the brain, lowers the immune system, and in turn, increases health and emotional issues. (ACE Study). We are requesting funds to help alleviate student stress of meeting basic needs. Requesting funds that could be used for: our before and after school programming, and items related to basic human needs such as: clothes, shoes, socks, bus passes, food, hygiene items, etc.

Being able to neutralize some of the stress of not getting basic human needs met consistently could be just what scholars need to build their resiliency and allow them to be able to come to school more ready to learn, ultimately improving academic performance and increasing graduation rates.
