About this Campaign

The second semester of sixth grade Social Studies in Lincoln Public Schools focuses on ancient civilizations. One of the civilizations sixth graders learn about is the Olmecs. As part of their study of the Olmecs, they learn about the giant heads the Olmecs created. They learn about why they may have been created and how they help us understand the Olmec culture.

Last year The Henry Doorly Zoo was gifted a replica Olmec Head from Omaha's sister city Xalapa, Mexico. This 20,000 pound head is a replica of the Olmec Colossal Head No. 1 nicknamed "The King."

The opportunity to see the Olmec Head at the Henry Doorly Zoo is a unique opportunity for our sixth graders at Lux Middle School because there are only nine replicas in the United States. The opportunity to see the replica will help our students understand the scale and importance of the heads.

We are requesting $2,414.25 plus cost reimbursement to cover our transportation cost to bus our sixth graders and teachers for this trip. Thank you for your consideration.

We would like to thank everyone who donated to help support our field trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo. You made it possible for us to take this field trip. Our students are very excited for the opportunity to see one of the Olmec Heads they have been learning about.
