About this Campaign
The Schoo AVID 8 class is hosting a walkathon to go to the Henry Doorly Zoo on May 18!
In February, AVID students worked on fundraiser projects. Students chose a cause to fundraise for, a method of fundraising, and planned out every possible detail. While most projects were theoretical, one group of 8th grade students asked to make their fundraising project come to life. They wanted to take their class to the zoo.
This trip will be not only fun but also educational! At the zoo, students will participate in a Zoo Careers workshop where they will learn more about the different types of jobs found at the zoo. As AVID is a college and career preparatory class, this trip will help students learn about the various postsecondary school and career pathways that could lead them to working at the zoo.
We are attempting to raise a total of $535 for this trip. $535 will cover entry to the zoo for all 30 students and 7 supervisors, the Zoo Careers workshop, and the required fees to complete the digital portion of this fundraiser. To raise this amount of money, students will participate in a walkathon:
- For every dollar donated, 1,000 steps will be added to the walkathon pool.
- If we meet our goal of $535, there will be a total of 535,000 steps in the walkathon pool!
- 535,000 steps/30 students = ~17,850 steps/student
- To go to the zoo, each student must walk their portion of the steps
- Students will use a pedometer to keep track of steps taken before school, during PE, and after school in order to show effort and dedication to the fundraiser
- Students will complete their steps independently during their assigned time in order to provide updates for how many steps we've taken as we continue raising money

As of 4/16, students have completed 30% of the walkathon, or 157,475 out of 535,000 steps! Students are working hard to track and complete their steps, and they are getting more excited every day about our trip to the zoo. Thank you for making this possible for the Schoo AVID 8 students!

Our trip is one week away! Our AVID 8 students went above and beyond in their walkathon. They needed to take 535,000 steps and they totaled over 560,000 steps!

Today was the day! Our AVID 8 students had the best time at the Henry Doorly Zoo. They got to learn about different zoo careers, and they had fun walking around the zoo with their friends.
